Month 7 – Negotiation and Deal Making (July 2020)

In all sincerity, I think this was my best class all throughout my studies at Full Sail University. The reason being that, it is so practical and so hands on. You get to put yourself in other people’s shoes and then also imagine how life would be in the industry. It is really great how I have been able to visualize my life as a manager in the music industry.

I thought that in this class, I would be learning how to draft contracts, but instead I got something better. I was able to research on industry standards and know what to expect in a contract and what I need to learn towards negotiating a deal. And then the professor! He is very down to earth, he makes the class really comfortable for you and gives life advice on how to maneuver the industry. The concepts gone through in this class were very essential towards career building.

We learned on communication styles, and how to use them to your advantage when meeting with a client and even meeting with your boss or just anyone in general. Also learned on avoiding negative emotions an instead of allowing negative emotions to destroy situations, you could use the reward system whereby instead of punishing people, you reward them for their actions. And also learned on Alternative Dispute Resolution, which is alternative ways to handle situations without considering litigation.

Some of the things he had gone over, I wish I knew them at an earlier stage of my life, because I would not have burned some bridges and would have been a more effective communicator, however, it never is too late to learn and apply these things to my life. This class is really amazing, I learned immensely from the class, and I hope to continue to apply these things to my everyday life.
